By a stroke of sheer luck it seems like we chose the final slightly warm days of this month to make our way into Boston. The 40 degree temperatures were quite welcoming as was the two room venue located on an unassuming local street in the Theater District. We arrived in the earlier part of the night to show our support for the opening DJ as well as the event organizer of The Vanishing Point events; Deon Butler aka Kaeno. The club was amply staffed with several security teams and we were lead inside with a minimal wait. Within a matter of minutes the guest list girls checked us in and we were on our way to explore the venue.
There was already a decent crowd going by 11pm and part of this is likely due to the reason that clubs in Boston close at 2am so you need to get your party on a little earlier than usual. The layout is nice with several ways to get to your destination however many of which were temporarily closed off for ease of traffic. Bright vibrant lights surrounded us as we made our way into the first and main room which is organized in a way that caters more towards front and center bottle service but it did not stop attendee’s from having a great time. The DJ had the crowd going although the sound was a bit commercial for my taste but everyone seemed to be loving it. That room had a more mashup, electro hits kind of feel to it.
As you make your way across the back of the room it leads you to the entrance of the second room which was a more open space clearly with the intention of creating a proper dance floor. Only the outer areas were lined with seating leaving the center of the room completely unobstructed which was fitting for the type of music being played. Additionally the room had its own bar for convenience in front of an elevated DJ booth surrounded by several large LED displays. The sound was commensurate with the room size and was set up in an opposite fashion of the main room so there weren’t any issues with sound interference from the other room. The vibe was certainly friendly and cool and I picked up some new acquaintances during my visit.
Kaeno opened up the night with a little progressive and a dash of tech house to get things started and towards the end of his set as it was approaching midnight he really started to pick up the pace in preparation of the headliner. As Mark arrived to the club he grabbed a seat and a drink and was chatting with his fans and getting a feel for the room. We all made our way over to make our introductions and can say he is genuinely a nice guy.
Mark got on the decks at midnight and knowing that he only had 2 hours to do his thing he made sure to get right to the point. He was banging out some danceable tunes in the realm of upper bpm trance and threw in some older more familiar tracks here and there. Nothing super dated, everything sounded fresh. Of course it wouldn’t be a signature Mark Sherry set without a little tech trance to boot. He has a great stage presence and tons of energy. Even though the stage is slightly elevated Mark made is known that he was connecting with the crowd commanding their utmost attention. I watched him behind the decks and he was putting in work for sure. He mixed up several live mash ups including one of the closing tracks which was “Seven Cities” with some layered some vocals on top of it and then quickly ran down from the booth to dance with us for a brief while before the night was over. There aren’t many DJ’s who would do such a thing these days. Kaeno grabbed the mic to hype the crowd during the final hurrah and those that remained on the floor cheered on. You know it was a good set because time flew by so quickly. It would have been nice to hear a bit more from Mark but it was time to head out. A fantastic debut indeed, he let Boston know what he was all about.
Overall it was a fun and enjoyable experience and I appreciate that Kaeno is trying to build a strong trance scene in Boston as there is much need for more great artists to be booked in this city. If trance is your thing you should definitely come out and support! If you missed this one check out his next show at Icon with Solarstone on Friday February 26th.
